Oxide scale formation of stainless steels with different heating methods – Effect of hydrogen as fuel

The evolution from natural gas usage to new technologies, such as the use of hydrogen fuel or electricity‐based heating, strongly influences oxidation stainless steel surface in reheating furnace. Thermogravimetric tests using different simulated combustion and induction conditions were performed for austenitic AISI 301 304, ferritic 444 grades. Simulated furnace atmospheres methods based on methane‐air, methane‐oxygen, hydrogen‐oxygen, methane‐hydrogen‐oxygen combinations. For simulations, air nitrogen used atmospheres. results indicate that changes heating H 2 ‐fueled only have a minor influence grade; whereas, their effects grades more pronounced. Transition methane‐air ‐oxyfuel increased total by 1.7 4 times 304 301, respectively; therefore, grade can be considered better suited transition H2‐oxyfuel use. shorter considerably decreases amount oxide scale grades, but atmosphere produced subscale inside matrix, which could hinder descaling process.
